The mission of the National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls (The Council) is to end the incarceration of women and girls. We work to ensure that no policies, laws, practices, organizing, and services are made without including our voices and ideas. Through support, awareness, and advocacy, The Council is committed to collectively building a new and just system grounded in human rights.

The purpose of the Council is to create a national network for members to share and receive information to help each other continue our individual and collective work. The Council is a place where members support one another by sharing the knowledge and the powerful experiences of the women and girls most affected by current legal polices. Girls and women who know the realities of incarceration, the many hurdles faced after returning home, and the harm done to families and communities by the carceral state. We are committed to using our experiences to inform and shape the policies, programs and laws that directly affect us.
